The WRTC2014 Organizing Committee relies on volunteers to help make this a world class competition. We are looking for help in the areas below. If you don’t see something that fits your interests, visit the volunteer sign-up page and let us know what you want to do.
Station Building
Beam Team
Each Beam Team will be responsible for installing and testing between 3 and 6 Tower/Antenna systems. The exact schedule will be defined by the BT Captain. It is imperative that all antennas be installed, tested, and ready for the competitors by 6:00 PM ET on Thursday, July 10, 2014. The morning of Friday, July 11 is reserved for any last minute adjustments. Competitors to arrive just after noon Friday to begin their preparation (station assembly).
Requirements:
- Take direction from the BT Captain
- Specific Assignments will be established by BT Captain (Tower, Antenna, site layout, etc.) – know your part and be prepared
- Be knowledgeable and competent in the assigned role by following the Beam Team Guide plus maintain a full knowledge of other roles and any step-by-step process that may be provided
- Be flexible in supporting fellow members
- Physical Requirements: Standing, walking, lifting no greater than 50 lbs (two person lift weight)
- Weather protection: Be prepared for typical summer weather conditions (rain, heat) – appropriate clothing and head protection, sunscreen, bug repellent is necessary for your personal use.
- Members should bring gloves, hard hats, and suitable footwear, and take breaks as needed for hydration and rest, as necessary. Watch your fellow members for any signs of any heat exhaustion or the need for breaks.

Site Captain
The Site Captain is responsible for managing a competition site from the time the equipment is delivered during setup until it is removed after takedown.
Responsibilities:
- Work with Site Area Manager
- Manage team of volunteers during the time the site is active (Thur-Sun)
- Work with other teams to coordinate logistics of equipment delivery
- Help to unload site equipment from trucks
- Support Beam Team set up of tower and antennas
- Help with site preparation (mark tower base, cut grass/brush)
- Set up tent, tables, generator, camp toilet, signage
- Provide site security
- Interface with public or press wanting to know more about WRTC or ham radio
- Provide or arrange transportation of competitors and referee on Fri/Sat/Sun
- Keep generator running, watch fuel levels
- Help to take down and pack equipment on Sunday
- Work with Site Kit buyer
- Clean site before leaving

Site Team Member
The site team monitors the site and helps to make sure the competitors have uninterrupted operation during the contest.
Responsibilities:
- Shares support duty with other team members (Thur-Sun)
- Set up tent, tables, generator, camp toilet, signage
- Help to unload site equipment from trucks
- Support Beam Team set up of tower and antennas
- Provide site security
- Interface with public or press wanting to know more about WRTC or ham radio
- Provide or arrange transportation of competitors and referee on Fri/Sat/Sun
- Keep generator running, watch fuel levels
- Help to take down and pack equipment on Sunday
- Clean site before leaving

Hospitality
Graphic Designer/Content Provider
Assist in designing and providing content for the various signs and publications to be used during the event. Approximate time frame, May and June.
Airport Greeters
Greeters will be stationed at Boston’s Logan airport (and potentially other transportation locations including Manchester and NYC airports) with signs to welcome WRTC Attendees. Responsibilities include directing guests to their ground transportation. Volunteers will be provided with a visitor list and will coordinate with the drivers.
Drivers for Airport Pick-Ups/Returns
Drivers are needed using either their own car or rented vans (as needed) to pick up and return attendees at Logan and other transportation venues.
Registration Set Up
Assist in tearing badges, stuffing welcome bags, and other assorted tasks.
Registration Desk
Will work with the professional meeting staff to provide specific assistance to attendees with event registration, hotel check-in and other arrival logistics. In addition, volunteers will assist staff with selling requested tickets for events, meals, and excursions during WRTC week.
Headquarters Welcome Team
You will welcome attendees to the hotel, help direct to the registration desk, the overflow hotels, etc.
Your main role is to make the attendees feel welcome and answer any questions.
Competitor Logistics
Assist in transporting competitors to/from the operating sites and/or provide other transportation during the competition weekend as required by the Site Area Managers’ plan(s).
Tour Volunteer
Serve as the official WRTC representative for bus transportation/excursions. You will make sure everyone is on the bus to/from excursion drop-offs and departures. In the case of any issues or problems, you would by the primary point of contact with the professional staff by phone. Lists of participating guests will be provided.
Communications
Staff our headquarters station (WR1TC) at WRTC-2014 HQ in Westborough, MA to assist with communications. You will help man telephones, monitor and communicate with field units over VHF radio, and coordinate logistics with our Director and volunteer staff at HQ. We also have openings for volunteers who can monitor a small set of local repeaters from their home station (for those who can’t make it to Westborough).

Information Technology (IT)
PC Desktop Specialist (need 5 prior to competition, 2 during the competition, 3 able and available to rove to remote sites during the competition)
Candidates should be proficient with Microsoft Windows, at least one of the popular contest logging programs (Win-Test, N1MM Logger, Writelog), and static TCP/IP network configuration in Windows. Candidate will assist with resolving general desktop and software issues at WRTC-2014 HQ prior to and during the competition. Candidate will also provide support for Competitors who may be having trouble with PC or network configuration prior to the contest.
Network Specialist
The Network specialist should be proficient with WiFi Access Point (AP) setup as well as general network configuration and debugging. This includes helping to debug client networking issues on as many platforms as possible (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android).
