I first discovered the magic of Amateur Radio from my Great Uncle Bob Fairchild, K4FG, who was first licensed in 1921 at age 15. Bob was one of the original pioneers of radio with a spark gap transmitter. Following in Bob’s footsteps, I got my first license as a 12-year old in 1974 as WN1UUA. After a long period of inactivity, I returned to radio contesting in 2009 to share the hobby with my kids while living in Geneva. Now I serve as President of Potomac Valley Radio Club, and have built a small ‘city lot’ station in Washington, DC. PVRC is blessed to have many ‘big gun’ stations like NR4M, N4RV and N3HBX where I have guest-operated and joined multi-operator teams.
I also enjoy competing in High Speed Telegraphy and represented the United States at HST World Championships in Bulgaria in 2009 and Germany in 2011. Of course my favorite mode is CW! I currently live in Northwest Washington DC with my lovely wife Ann and four sons Patrick, Kody, Aidan and Connor. Our older boys all have Amateur licenses, and Connor recently turned 8 and is learning Morse code. In addition to radio, our family enjoys traveling and skiing together.
I am looking forward to some intense competition, catching up with old friends and making new ones at WRTC2014.
