Tours and Activities

This page contains a list of tours, activities and official dinners for WRTC2014 week. Visit the registration site to sign up and prepay for the events you would like to attend. All reservations need to be made no later than June 17.

Note that all attendees are required to register and pay for tours. Tours will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. We reserve the right to change and/or cancel tours. Full refunds will be provided for any canceled activities. Meals will not be provided during tours except where indicated. All prices are per person.

Official dinners and other HQ meals will be provided for our sponsored guests (e.g., competitors, referees, etc.). All other visitors must register and pay for their meals.

Wednesday, July 9

Ham Widows’ Ball

WRTC will be offering a wonderful meet and greet event exclusively for spouses and significant others. Plan on attending and get to know your fellow “widows” at this free event from 5-7 PM at the Doubletree HQ hotel. Please join the fun in a first ever, hosted, radio-free mixer for friends and spouses!

Welcome Barbeque, $40

Meet the competitors and referees while enjoying a traditional American Bar B-Q including chicken, burgers, and all the fixings! Cash Bar.

Thursday, July 10

Boston Activities

Transportation to Boston, $25 Roundtrip

It is approximately a 45 min. ride from the hotel to Boston. These luxury coaches will depart the hotel at 9:30 and bring you to the historic Faneuil Hall/Waterfront area of Boston where you will find numerous tours and activities that you can choose on your own. Or, sign up for one of the special WRTC group tours below. Lunch is not included in these activities. Buses will return to the hotel in afternoon in plenty of time to participate in the WRTC Opening Ceremonies.

Old Town Trolley, $36

The Old Town Trolley is a great way to see Boston and learn about the various sites. The Green and Orange trolleys stop at 16 popular tourist attractions. You are able to get on and off trolley at various locations. Your ticket is good for 2 consecutive days.

Note:  Will also need to purchase transportation into Boston (see above).

Duck Tour and Fenway Park, $50

Boston is known for their Duck Tours.  The driver will point out a variety of local attractions and then your duck will splash into the Charles River.  This 80 minute tour is an experience not to be missed. At the conclusion of the Duck Tour we will head to Fenway Park for a behind the scenes tour of the oldest baseball stadium in American.

Note:  Will also need to purchase transportation into Boston (see above).

Other Activities

Visit to ARRL in Newington, CT, $25 Roundtrip

10:00 AM Bus leaves hotel for the trip to ARRL.  We will tour the facility and you will have the opportunity to do some operating.  We will stop at a restaurant for lunch (not included) and then return to the hotel in time for the WRTC Opening Ceremonies.

Shopping trip to Ham Radio Outlet in tax-free Salem, NH, $20

Don’t miss this opportunity to pick up some additional equipment at a great price. Lunch is not included.

Whale Watch, 10:00 – 1:00 PM, $47

Boston’s hi-speed catamarans offer whale watching at its best.  These catamarans provide the fastest, most comfortable way to view the ocean’s most magnificent creatures. It is guaranteed that you will see a whale.

Salem, MA self-guided tour, $35 Roundtrip

9:00 depart hotel, 10:00 arrive Salem

Ghost tours, Salem Trolley, Witch Museum, House of Seven Gables, and Shopping. Salem is rich in history and intrigue going back to the earliest days of New England. For more information visit http://www.salem.org/.

3:00 bus departs Salem for hotel, arrives 4:00

Sunday, July 13

Transportation to Boston for self-guided touring/shopping, $25 Roundtrip

Casino trip (1.5 hours to Mohegan Sun) $45

Mohegan Sun is one of the largest casinos in the United States with 364,000 square feet of gaming space.  Located just 90 minutes away, Mohegan Sun offers shopping and premier restaurants in addition to the casino experience. Luxury coaches will depart the hotel at 9:00 and will return in the late afternoon. Lunch is not included.

Monday, July 14

Trip to Newport, RI, $40 Roundtrip

9:00 bus departs, arrives Newport at 10:30

  • On own to shop, visit mansions, dine, etc.
  • Lunch is not included.

3:00 depart Newport, 4:30 arrive at hotel

Marconi Wireless Station Site and Chatham Marconi Maritime Museum, $40 Roundtrip

Experience historic sites associated with Marconi and the birth of wireless communication.

9:00 Bus departs, arrives 11:00

3:00 depart for hotel, 5:00 back at hotel

U.S. Navy Sub Museum, Groton, CT, $40 Roundtrip

8:00 depart Westborough, 10:00 arrive U.S. Navy Submarine Museum

  • Visit museum hosted by Adm. Ed Giambastiani USN, Retired, N4OC, and former U.S. Vice Chair, Joint Chiefs of Staff, WRTC Grand Marshall

Closing Ceremony and Award Dinner, $55
