Additional Tourist Information
The “Freedom Trail” is a self-guided tour of historic Boston. Nearby significant historical sites include the American Revolution battlegrounds at Concord and Lexington.
World-famous universities such as Harvard and M.I.T. are located across the Charles River from Boston in Cambridge. New England’s beaches, including Cape Cod, the Connecticut shore, and the Maine coast are all available within a short drive. Boat tours, including visits to the islands of Boston Harbor, whale-watching cruises and deep-sea fishing excursions are also available in the summer months.
The mountains, lakes, and forests of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont are popular for hiking, camping and similar outdoor recreational activities. Vermont, of course, is the home of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, and tours are offered at their facility. Besides the lighthouse-dotted coastline, Maine offers shopping opportunities at the famous L.L. Bean store and numerous factory outlet stores in Freeport.
New Hampshire is one of the few states in the United States without a sales or value-added tax. It is especially interesting as a shopping destination for hams, with a Ham Radio Outlet branch located just over the border from Massachusetts.
Connecticut, of course, is home to the ARRL and W1AW. Founded in 1914, The American Radio Relay League is the national association for Amateur Radio in the USA and will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2014. Today, with more than 156,000 members, ARRL is the largest organization of radio amateurs in the United States.
