I started in ham radio as a schoolboy at 5B4ES and became licensed at age 14. Early on I became an enthusiast in contesting and have been competing ever since. I have spent the last 20 years of my life training in the UK on a professional level, and in my limited free time I try to compete where possible as a guest operator. WRTC qualification maintains my motivation to keep contesting. I am grateful for the hospitality of my hosts (G5W, VE7SV, 5B4AGN, 5B4ES, 5B4XF, 5B4MF, TM6M) and for their giving me the opportunity to produce a competitive score and qualify for WRTC2014.
Over the last 10 years I taught myself computer programming and combined this with ham radio to develop a number of online tools. Some of these projects include Club Log’s DXpedition and propagation charts, OQRS and QSL tools. I have also written and still maintain the RSGB IOTA contest adjudication software.
For my next adventure I am moving to Philadelphia to complete my surgical training and I look forward to experiencing pile-ups from the other side of the Atlantic.
WRTC is undoubtedly the greatest event on the contesting calendar. This will be my fifth participation in this world-class event and my third effort with my teammate Stavros, 5B4AFM. I am really looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones, all with the same common passion of radiosport. The WRTC2014 organizing team has worked very hard over the last four years and the setup in Boston looks impressive. Without doubt, WRTC2014 promises to be the best WRTC ever. Roll on July!
