Q: What are Sponsored Teams?

Sponsored Teams are selected by individuals or organizations that have made a significant donation to WRTC2014. A Team Sponsor may choose to be one of the operators, or may select another operator to represent him. Operators must be approved by the WRTC2014 Organizers and be bona fide world-class operators.

The practice of having a few Sponsored Team spots is permitted by the WRTC Sanctioning Committee as a way to help fund the event. Sponsored Teams competed in Brazil in 2006 and Russia in 2010.

Of the four Sponsored Team slots available at WRTC2014, one has been claimed, two more are currently available, and the last one will be auctioned in either late 2013 or early 2014. We have received several serious inquiries on the terms and conditions of Team Sponsorship, so if you are interested, we would advise contact Doug, K1DG, to express your interest.

The donation level for a Team Sponsorship at WRTC2010 was set at 50,000 euro (about 70,000 US dollars). For WRTC2014, the donation level is set at 50,000 US dollars (or euro equivalent…we are flexible).

The WRTC2014 Organizing Committee will be conducting a capability and training test for the WRTC2014 stations and volunteers during the July 2013 running of the IARU HF Championship. The goals of the 2013 Station Test are:

  • Expand the pool of experienced teams for station set up
  • Evaluate proposed site locations for radio quietness and equality
  • Confirm logistics and procedures to set up and tear down a large number of stations
  • Gather log data under competition conditions to share with WRTC 2014 competitors

We look forward to feedback from the contest community.”

The rules are very similar to those used at WRTC 2010 in Russia. The most significant change is in rule 16.2.4 that allows both radios to transmit at any time.

WRTC2014, Inc., host of the 2014 World Radiosport Team Championship competition is pleased to announce the release of a promotional video about the upcoming event. Using footage from previous WRTC competitions, the video conveys the energy, excitement, and sporting goodwill that results when amateur radio contesters from around the world come together to compete on a level playing field.

Professionally produced by well-known DXpeditioner and videographer, James Brooks, 9V1YC, with narration provided by Erik Thompson, KA6UAI, the video is designed for all audiences. The high quality of video production and running time of just under 5 minutes makes it ideal for use at radio club meetings, for introducing amateur radio to young people, or promoting ham radio at public events.

The first showing of the video was at the July 2011 ARRL Board of Directors meeting. Response was enthusiastic with ARRL News reporting, “The Board welcomed the opportunity for the ARRL’s involvement with the World Radiosport Team Championship (WRTC) in 2014, coinciding with the League’s Centennial Celebration.”

Contact info@wrtc2014.org for information on how to download the video in mp4 format for use when an Internet connection is not available. The WRTC2014 committee would enjoy receiving reports of where the video has been presented and any reactions.

WRTC2014 ACTIVE DURING DAYTON HAMVENTION® WEEKEND

WRTC2014, Inc., host of the 2014 World Radiosport Team Championship competition, was highly visible at multiple events during the Dayton Hamvention® weekend May 20-21, 2011. Members of the WRTC 2014 organizing committee met with the WRTC Advisory Committee, explored equipment options with ham radio vendors, discussed event plans with interested contesters, and did some fund raising.

The three initial WRTC2014 Advisory Council members were attending the convention and spent some time sharing their experience with the organizing committee and contributing some valuable ideas. WRTC2014 Chairman Doug Grant, K1DG, said, “We have much to do in a short time. It is great to have access to their experience.” He continued, “A number of prospective Advisory Council members stepped forward and we look forward to announcing them in the near future.”

WRTC2014 Co-Chair Randy Thompson, K5ZD, and his WRTC 2010 teammate Tom Georgens, W2SC, gave a presentation about their WRTC experience in Moscow to a packed Contest Forum on Saturday afternoon. Thompson stated, “This was the most intense operating event I have ever experienced!” One of the principal organizers of WRTC2010, Igor “Harry” Booklan, was in attendance and recognized for his outstanding work in managing the Moscow event.

After years and years of consecutive wins in the Poisson d’Avril Contest (see http://poissondavril.webs.com/), contest organizer Doug Grant, K1DG, decided to give someone else a chance for the victory – by offering the winner’s trophy at auction on behalf of WRTC2014 fund raising. The winning bid of $300 was submitted by the multi-op team of W1MD, K1QX, and K1XX. The new champions received the spoils of their victory in front of the Contest Forum attendees. Marty Durham, W1MD, could only stand in silent awe as he was handed the multi-colored trophy with blinking lights (design by Scott, KA9FOX).

A highlight of the Hamvention weekend for contesters is the Contest Dinner on Saturday night at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Dayton. WRTC2014 was featured on the inside cover of the dinner program. The WRTC organizers also placed an envelope on each table and asked attendees to make a donation or pledge. The table with the highest total was promised a prize. The winning table with contributions from John Evans, N3HBX, George Harlem, W1EBI, Ed Parish, K1EP, Al Rousseau, W1FJ, Eric Scace, K3NA, and Mark Bailey KD4D, donated $2351. They each received $100 gift certificates from DX Engineering or Ham Radio Outlet. The second place table, with $1800, included contributions by W2GD, W3LPL, W2SC, YV5EED, K5GO, JH1NBN, W6VNR, and K4ZA. Contributions from the dinner attendees totaled $15,025 in cash, checks, and pledges.

Doug Grant, K1DG, expressed his appreciation to everyone who contributed. “More than a radio competition, WRTC2014 is a chance to share the fun of radiosport with others inside and outside the hobby. These contributions will help us accomplish that mission.”
